Speaking on the Stillness and Success podcast during a meditation retreat in India, Stephen shared how practising Transcendental Meditation® (TM) — including advanced meditation programs — helped him achieve decades of success in real estate investing while maintaining a deeply balanced lifestyle.

For nearly 30 years, he combined extended daily meditation with focused afternoon work, discovering that less effort often produced greater results.


A Different Approach to Success

Stephen’s professional path included business school, work in the high-tech sector in California, and later a move to Fairfield, Iowa — home to Maharishi International University (MIU), a community known for consciousness-based education and daily meditation practice.

After years of meditation, he noticed an unexpected shift.

“When I learned Transcendental Meditation, I realised I could work less and achieve more,” he said.

Rather than pushing harder, he found his decisions became clearer and more efficient — often requiring far less effort.


How Stephen First Learned Transcendental Meditation

Stephen first heard about TM at the age of 17 while attending boarding school in Massachusetts.

His interest had already been shaped by philosophical discussions of enlightenment and human potential.

“I was fascinated by the idea that people like Socrates and Plato described a state where you could experience truth, beauty and goodness,” he said.

Learning Transcendental Meditation gave him something those philosophical ideas lacked — a practical technique.

“Suddenly there was a way to actually experience it,” he said.

A Life-Changing Experience on a TM Retreat

About a year after learning TM, Stephen attended his first Transcendental Meditation retreat — an experience that dramatically shifted his perception.

After an extended meditation session, he opened his eyes and noticed something unusual.

“Everything looked more real,” he said.

“I remember looking at my hiking boots and thought — how can they look more real than before?”

He describes this moment as the beginning of a more vivid, connected experience of life.

“Everything looked more beautiful,” he said.

“That’s when I realised meditation was changing the way I experienced the world.”


Why Transcendental Meditation Retreats Deepen Growth

Stephen continued attending longer retreats, including month-long programs involving repeated meditation sessions, rest and TM advanced techniques.

When he returned home afterwards, even familiar experiences felt new.

“The world looked brand new,” he said.

“Music sounded different — like I was hearing things I’d never noticed before.”

These retreats, he says, accelerated personal growth and strengthened clarity in everyday life.


From Meditation Practice to Real Estate Success

After moving to Fairfield with his family, Stephen became involved in a structured advanced meditation routine known as the “Invincible America Assembly,” which combines Transcendental Meditation with the advanced TM-Sidhi program.

The routine included several hours of TM and related practices each morning.

“You end the meditation and the most important thing to do next just comes to mind,” he said.

As his intuition and clarity increased, so did his success in real estate investing.

Initially treating real estate as a part-time activity, he began noticing consistent results.

“Everything I invested in worked out well,” he said.

Over time, this grew into a full-time focus.


Working Fewer Hours With Greater Focus

Stephen’s daily structure was unconventional:

  • extended meditation and TM advanced techniques in the morning
  • focused professional activity in the afternoon
  • additional evening practice for balance and recovery

Rather than feeling tired, he says he experienced increased energy and precision.

“You have so much clarity and focus,” he said.

“When you start an activity, you know exactly what to do.”

The result was high productivity within shorter working hours — often just a few highly focused hours each day.


TM, Intuition and Decision-Making

Real estate investing often requires judgement that goes beyond data alone.

“You have to get a feel for things,” Stephen said.

He believes regular meditation helped refine his intuition — allowing him to recognise better opportunities more quickly.

“You see a property and you just know it’s the right one.”

This clarity helped him specialise in particular markets and property types, where his expertise compounded over time.


Staying Calm During Economic Uncertainty

During the global financial crisis of 2008, when many investors struggled, Stephen says his steady meditation practice helped him stay clear and practical.

Rather than reacting emotionally, he focused on refinancing and improving cash flow.

“Everything lined up,” he said.

“I was getting approvals and things just started to snowball.”

He describes this period as an example of how clarity and calm decision-making can support long-term success.


The Role of Advanced TM Practice

Stephen credits much of his professional momentum to deeper meditation programs learned after years of regular TM practice.

The TM advanced techniques are designed to increase coherence between mind and body, supporting alertness, energy and creative thinking.

“The mind becomes clearer, intuition improves, and activity flows more easily,” he said.

For him, this translated into business outcomes that felt natural rather than forced.

His days prioritised inner development first, with professional activity flowing from that foundation.

“It didn’t feel like strain,” he said.

“The focus was strong, but it was effortless.”

After three decades of this approach, he says the greatest benefit has been living in alignment with his natural strengths while maintaining balance and wellbeing.
