TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why should I learn TM?

There’s an epidemic of stress and anxiety in the world today. The rest we get from sleep is not enough to reduce the accumulation of stress and fatigue from our busy daily lives.

Many people aren’t aware of all the tension they carry – it feels normal. However, after learning TM, their perception and response to the exact situations in life are calmer, more peaceful and harmonious. They find they are happier, at ease and enjoy improved relationships, less stress, more creativity and better health.

Consider Transcendental Meditation to be an investment in your well being. By practising TM for 20 minutes twice a day, your returns will beTo gain more out of life – more happiness, more inner peace, satisfying achievements, fulfilling relationships,  with less stress and strain.

How will I find time for TM?

We just practise TM for 20 minutes twice a day, sitting comfortably with our eyes closed. That’s enough to enjoy all the benefits.

People do TM because it’s natural, effortless, and enjoyable, and you appreciate the benefits from the short time you take out of your busy day. It’s important what we prioritise. If you want the arrow to hit the target, you must first draw it back on the bow. Gaining energy, strength, and focus through TM‘s deep rest is the basis for success.

What if I’m sceptical?

The TM technique’s effectiveness is the same whether you believe it will work or are completely sceptical. That’s because it automatically and effortlessly allows your active thinking mind to settle down to a state of deep inner calm.

Is TM meditation hard?

No. TM is entirely effortless. Other techniques involve concentration or contemplation. There is no control of the mind in TM. The mind naturally settles down to quieter levels, and the body becomes more rested.

Will Transcendental Meditation interfere with my existing beliefs?

No. Transcendental Meditation is a simple mental technique with scientifically proven benefits. It requires no belief system, philosophy, or lifestyle change. People of all faiths practise TM and find it only enhances their existing beliefs.

Why do I need to pay TM course fees?

The TM course fee helps cover the operating costs of the national network of 40 TM Centres/locations and the national offices that serve them to provide personal TM instruction and free lifetime follow-up support. They are proportionate to your income or employment or student situation.

Part of your course fee helps those in need learn the TM technique through our collaboration with the David Lynch Foundation Australia. More than 1 million sponsorships globally have enabled at-risk children, veterans, first responders, refugees, domestic violence victims, and the homeless to learn Transcendental Meditation through this partnership. Do I need to stop my medication when I learn TM?

Medication does not interfere with the benefits of meditation. Over time, as the mind and body become more robust, you may find the need for medication gradually reduces. If your doctor has prescribed medication, it’s best to go by that advice and discuss any changes with your doctor.

What happens during TM?

The TM technique allows your mind to easily settle inward until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your awareness. It is entirely different to other meditation techniques as it involves no concentrating or focusing, no trying to “empty the mind”.

Can I teach myself TM?

Imagine trying to learn a natural golf swing or the violin. You know how valuable a good teacher is to show you the proper technique. The TM technique is easy to learn but requires personalised interactive guidance. For this reason, it’s taught only through one-on-one instruction by a certified TM teacher.

There is no other way to learn the authentic TM technique — and there is no evidence that anything else provides the full range of benefits documented in the published research on the TM technique.

Do I need to concentrate during Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation does not involve concentration. Unlike other types of meditation, TM requires no effort, no trying to “empty the mind”, no mindfulness, and no control.

Even if you think you “can’t meditate”, anyone can do it. TM is easy to learn and enjoyable to practice. It uses the mind’s natural tendency instead of fighting against it. It’s 100% natural and effective.
Everyone can practice TM, including people with ADHD, autism and children from 10 years of age. TM doesn’t involve any concentration, but as a result, your ability to concentrate increases in daily life.

What is the difference between sleeping and doing TM?

The state of consciousness experienced during Transcendental Meditation is significantly different from the other consciousness states – of deep sleep, dreaming or waking.
